Cultural Crossroads

How might we better understand identity in places of cultural and historical intersection?

Why Kerala?

Kerala, a State in southwestern India, is home to the most diverse mix of religions in the country. In the fast-growing city of Kochi, long-established communities intermingle with newcomers, and historic neighborhoods connect to recent developments, and a mix of Hindus, Jews, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, and other faiths and ethnicities have found a place to call home.

Traveling in Kerala is a chance to connect with multiple beliefs and backgrounds, in a country that is often assumed by the global community to be more homogenous than it is. This region offers insight into how different groups of people move, settle, identify and re-identify themselves over time, and challenges how we all label different cultures and traditions. As we meet with local groups and learn about life here, we’ll consider how we might shift the way we recognize cultural diversity, in other countries and back home. How are traditions shared? How are cultural narratives created and maintained? How do people work together across religious, linguistic, or cultural divisions?
