Cultural Crossroads

How might we better understand identity in places of cultural and historical intersection?

Why Andalusia?

Andalusia stands out from the rest of Spain. More than any other part of the country, this southernmost region is still deeply rooted in its history as a stronghold of the North African Moors who ruled here for centuries. The historic mix of Islamic, Jewish, and Christian influence that resulted is palpable in the area’s art and architecture, while modern debates about multiculturalism continue to play out here today.

As we explore a region at the crossroads of two major continents and multiple languages and ideologies, we’ll work to understand these dynamics. How do historic ideas about coexistence shape current debates over religious rights, immigration, and Spanish culture? How might we build thriving multicultural communities in our own local, and global spaces?
