India Summer 2016: Day 5 – To the Village
In 2016 we are leading 4 high school summer trips. You can read all about our Global Innovators trips or get in touch to ask us any questions about the programs. Our 2016 India trip focuses on global healthcare, technology, and innovation. During the trip, students take turns writing a daily blog post to describe their project process and exploration, follow along here. Today, our group had a late breakfast and then traveled outside the city to our friend Sanju’s farmhouse for lunch. Sanju’s house was decorated in south Indian style, including an open courtyard and a beautiful embroidered painting. For lunch, we ate on banana leaves, indulging on a delicious meal of chicken, fish, coconut rice, chicken curry, and much more. We then walked into the nearby village to focus on the project and split up into groups to map health issues and opportunities in the area. After that, we went back to the house and had an ice cream and brownie surprise! The group made a pit stop to a local sewage treatment plant to learn about local sanitation in relation to health. We headed back to our guesthouse and stayed in for indian food and pizza before our early morning flight tomorrow.
Today, we advanced on the project through exploring a rural village and the health challenges they face there. We split up into groups of 3-4 people and sketched out an area we were assigned of the village. Then, we came together and discussed the heath benefits and disadvantages of living in that particular village. It was hard because as foreigners it is easy to make assumptions and so we had to think critically in order to approach the issues in a unbiased way! Overall, we learned a lot about the differences between the city and the rural village and India as a whole.
