Croatia 2016: Day 2 – Exploring Design in Split

In 2016 we are leading 4 high school summer trips. You can read all about our Global Innovators trips or get in touch to ask us any questions about the programs. Our 2016 Croatia trip focuses on sustainable development and small business in the country. During the trip, students take turns writing a daily blog post to describe their project process and exploration, follow along here. Today as we spent our first full day together in Croatia and we began our project while exploring and becoming more familiar with the country.

We started the day off with a breakfast at caffe bar – pivnica plac, where we stayed to work on our first design activity – the mini design. For this activity we paired off and after several rounds of asking our partner questions we were left with challenge of designing our partner’s dream accommodation using the information we had gathered through the questions.

Naturally, we all just described exactly what our partners had told us they wanted when we presented our solution to the group. However, this was a learning moment for all of us to take with us as we do our bigger project, realizing that rather than repeating exactly what our partner had said, we should take those ideas and develop them to come up with a new ideDSC01736 DSC01775DSC01798a of what we think would suit their desires. After this we walked through the city and market to find our first beach of the trip. We then walked backed to the apartment and grabbed a bakery lunch along the way. After lunch we did our second activity, creating what we thought would be the perfect shop for split. This meant partnering up and walking around talking to locals, tourists, and shop owners trying to get a feel of their different thoughts on business in Croatia. After this we returned to the beach from the morning to go for a swim. While at the beach we got to go on a giant float park. We finished the day with a delicious pizza dinner and exploring the city at night.
