Australia Day 7: Carly’s Birthday

January 2016, Atlas Workshops partnered with Mill Springs Academy to lead the Life and Land Australia trip, a custom school trip for students from Mill Springs to explore the intersection of environmental issues, conservation, and lifestyles in Australia. The diverse group of 11 students came from different years and background to collaborate on this for-credit field course and project. These are daily updates from different student travelers. On January 14th of 2016 we flew from Cairns to Sydney. We arrived at the airport around 9:30 to 10 o’clock in the morning. During the flight to Sydney, a thunderstorm arrived and we had some pretty bad turbulence–which was a bit scary. Many people on the plane did not like it but some people from our group said it was like riding a roller coaster. And other people felt like they were going to pee their pants after an extra hour circling the airport. Once we landed, we headed straight for our hotel.  Our first impression of Sydney is that it is a mixture of Atlanta and New York City.

Before dinner we went for a walk, but the rain cut it short–so we came back for dinner.  Later we tried another walk and ended up at a chocolate bar for Carly’s birthday. At the chocolate bar many people got milkshakes and brownies. A couple of us got concentrated chocolate shots while Haley and I shared a chocolate cake with ice cream. While we were there, the teachers took a lot of pictures. -Carly and Emily
